Building Pads and Concrete Slabs in Sunnyside, WA

Building Pads · Sunnyside, WA

A level, compacted pad for your shop or camper

Building pads are the flat, packed ground that a shop, garage, house or camper sits on. Bedrock Excavation and General Contracting cuts and levels the pad, then builds a compacted gravel base on top. When you want a concrete slab, we pour it too. We build pads as part of our excavation work in Sunnyside and across the Lower Yakima Valley and the Tri-Cities.

A pad is one step in a bigger project. When it is done, we can also build the shop or carport that sits on it. Call or text (509) 439-2533, and we look at the spot and put the quote in writing.

What We Handle

  • Shop pads and garage pads cut and leveled to the building's size
  • House pads built to the size and height on your plans
  • Camper and RV pads, level and firm, with room to back in
  • Topsoil and roots stripped out before the base goes in
  • Gravel base spread in thin layers, each layer compacted
  • Pads sloped so water runs off and away from the building
  • Concrete slabs formed and poured on the finished pad
  • Dirt and gravel hauled in or out with our own trailer

How Do We Build a Shop Pad or House Pad?

Pad preparation starts with the size of the pad and its finished height. We strip the topsoil and roots first, so the pad sits on firm ground. Then we cut the high side and fill the low side until the ground is level. A lot that still needs clearing gets site preparation first.

Next comes the gravel base. We spread the gravel in thin layers and compact each one before the next goes down. Thin layers pack tight all the way through, so the pad settles less later.

The finished pad sits a little above the ground around it, with a gentle slope to the edges. Snowmelt and sprinkler water run off it, away from the building. When the yard needs reshaping too, lot and yard grading carries the water farther off.

Concrete Slabs and Concrete Pads on a Compacted Base

A concrete slab rests on the ground under it. Soft spots below show up later as cracks or a sunken corner. We pour on the compacted gravel pad, so the slab has even support.

Recent work includes a 16 by 24 concrete slab. On another job, we tore out an old 10 by 10 slab. A new 10 by 21 slab took its place. When old concrete has to go, our concrete tear-out work clears the ground first.

Concrete shrinks as it dries, so some cracking is normal. Control joints are planned cracks that give the slab a straight line to crack along. On a 4-inch slab, industry guides space them about 10 feet apart. The written quote spells out the slab thickness and any reinforcement.

Building Pads for Lower Yakima Valley Soil and Weather

USDA soil maps show silt loam under most of the ground around Sunnyside and Grandview. The same maps rate most of it high for frost action. Wet silt can heave when it freezes and turn soft when it thaws.

NOAA climate records show Sunnyside averages about 124 nights a year at or below freezing. Gravel drains fast and resists frost heave far better than silt. That is why the compacted gravel base and the slope of the pad both matter here.

Summer brings the other extreme, with about 45 days a year at 90 degrees or hotter. Concrete industry guides call for pouring in the cooler part of the day and curing right away. In cold weather, the same guides say fresh concrete should be kept from freezing for about two days.

FAQ

Building Pads Questions, Answered

Common questions about building pads around Sunnyside and the towns out to Yakima and the Tri-Cities. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (509) 439-2533

How much does a building pad or concrete slab cost?
Size drives most of the price, then the cut and fill your spot needs. For a concrete slab, the thickness and the reinforcement matter too. So does access for the trucks. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Should my pad be compacted gravel or a concrete slab?
Compacted gravel works well under a camper or a carport. A concrete slab gives a shop or garage a hard, flat floor. Gravel costs less up front, and a well-built gravel pad can take a slab later.
Can you build a camper pad or RV pad?
Yes. A camper pad needs to be level and firm, with room to back the camper in. We have built one for a customer to park and store a new camper. We build them in compacted gravel or concrete.
Do I need a permit for a shop pad or a concrete slab?
It depends on the town and on what goes on the pad. The City of Yakima, for one, requires a grading permit whenever cuts or fills are proposed. Yakima County Public Services, Benton County Building, Franklin County Building or your city answers it for your lot. Ask before the work starts, and we point you to the right office.
Who finds the buried lines before you dig the pad?
Washington law requires a locate request through Washington 811 at least two full business days before digging. The utilities then mark their own lines. A private line you own, like power run out to a shop, is yours to find. The 811 center keeps a list of private locators you can hire.
How long before I can drive on a new concrete slab?
Concrete keeps gaining strength for weeks after the pour. Ready-mix industry guidance calls for curing it for at least the first 3 to 7 days. We tell you when the slab can take a car and when it can take heavier loads.
