Orchard removal is the job of pulling an old orchard out of the ground, roots and all. Bedrock Excavation and General Contracting pulls old orchards across the Lower Yakima Valley and the Tri-Cities. We do this work for orchard owners and acreage owners. When the job is done, the ground is clear for what comes next.
Apples cover more acres in Yakima County than any other crop. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 53,703 acres of apples there. When an old block has to go, the trees and roots come out before anything new goes in. Sunnyside sits at the center of our service area, which reaches Yakima and the Tri-Cities.
Tell us about the teardown, dirt work, pad or building project and where it is. We look at the job and put the quote in writing.
Each job starts with a look at the orchard. We see how big the trees are and how the rows are set up. Then we put the quote in writing, and it covers what is in the rows.
State law counts any work that moves earth as excavation, and pulling roots moves plenty of it. The exemption for farm tilling covers only shallow work. So a locate request goes to Washington 811 at least two full business days before the work starts.
Then each tree comes out with its stump and roots. The wood is piled where you want it or hauled away. A recent job pulled an old apple orchard and cleared 2 acres.
Burning the trees from an orchard tear-out takes an agricultural burn permit. The Washington State Department of Ecology lists who issues it in each county. In Yakima County, that is the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency, and in Benton County, the Benton Clean Air Agency. For Franklin County, Ecology lists its Eastern Regional Office and the Franklin Conservation District.
On tribal land, Ecology points to the tribal government and the EPA. Ecology says the pile permit covers orchard tear-out on land that stays in farming. Ground headed for a house or a shop is a question to ask the agency before anything burns. Permit holders also check the daily burn decision before they burn.
The Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency urges growers to look at options other than burning, like grinding or composting the wood. Whether a pile burns is the agency's call, so our quote covers piling the wood or hauling it away.
Some old orchard ground goes into hay or pasture for a while. The WSU extension service says five years or more in a non-woody crop can ease replant disease. That disease stunts young fruit trees set into old orchard ground. After the trees come out, land grading smooths the field for the next use.
Old orchard ground can also become a building site. Ecology says lead arsenate, an early 1900s orchard pesticide, left lead and arsenic in some of that soil. Its guidance for new homes on former orchard land starts with the land's history and a soil test. Then site preparation for a new build gets the lot ready.

We cut and fill large sites and move dirt in bulk for shops and commercial buildings. Extra dirt leaves by the load, and we haul in fill or gravel when a site runs short.
Learn MoreThe company that cuts your pad can also build the carport or shop that sits on it. One call covers both halves of the project.
When a job needs gravel brought in or debris taken out, we haul it on our own trailer. Extra dirt from a cut can go out the same way.
