Grading shapes the ground so water runs off and a surface sits even. Bedrock Excavation and General Contracting does driveway grading and builds gravel driveways across the Lower Yakima Valley and the Tri-Cities. We grade yards and lots too, so water moves away from the house. Sunnyside sits at the center of our service area.
Grading is one part of our excavation and dirt work around Sunnyside. On farm ground, it can follow orchard removal when the cleared land is leveled for a building site or pasture. Call or text (509) 439-2533, and we look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Potholes and washboard ripples are the signs a gravel driveway needs grading. Driveway grading cuts the surface down to the bottom of the potholes and washboard. The loose gravel then gets spread back across the drive and shaped again.
A gravel driveway sheds water through its crown, a gentle high line down the middle. A federal gravel roads guide recommends a drop of about half an inch per foot from the center out. The ideal shape is a straight slope from each edge up to the center, like a roof. A rounded top holds water in the middle, and the potholes come back.
A new gravel driveway starts with a base layer of larger rock for strength. A top layer of crushed rock with fine material goes over it and packs into a hard crust. We haul the gravel in ourselves. One of our jobs finished a gravel driveway beside a concrete walk.
Sunnyside gets little rain. NOAA's climate normals for 1991 to 2020 put the town at about 7.7 inches of precipitation a year. The same federal guide names dry weather as one cause of washboard. In dry weather the surface crust loosens, and the stone and sand drift into ripples under traffic.
Hard braking and fast starts add to the ripples. So do poor gravel and a surface with no crown. Gravel with the right mix of fine material resists washboard, and a regrade puts the crown back.
Dry country needs a crown too. The federal guide shows a desert road with under 10 inches of rain a year. It still performs poorly, because it has no crown and no ditches. In Sunnyside, December is the wettest month, and a crown sheds that winter water before it softens the drive.
The residential code Washington uses says a lot must be graded to drain water away from the foundation. The ground should fall at least 6 inches within the first 10 feet. The rule applies to new homes, and it is a good target for older yards too.
Where a wall or a lot line leaves no room for that fall, the code calls for swales or drains. A swale is a shallow, graded channel that carries water off. One of our jobs redirected a drain to keep water away from a home.
On a new build, finish grading gives the ground its final shape. It comes after the site preparation work and after a shop pad or house pad is built. Lot grading and land grading on acreage work the same way on more ground.

Before any digging starts, a locate request goes to 811 so buried utility lines get marked. Washington law calls for it two to 10 full business days ahead.

We build shops, carports and other outbuildings, plus fences, gates, decks and pergolas. The same company that prepares the ground puts up the structure.

When a job needs gravel brought in or debris taken out, we haul it on our own trailer. Extra dirt from a cut can go out the same way.
