Whole buildings taken down and the debris hauled away

Demolition clears a building off your property once it is past saving. We take down whole structures: houses, barns, garages, sheds and shops. We also tear out old concrete slabs and haul the debris away ourselves. Bedrock Excavation and General Contracting does this work across the Lower Yakima Valley and the Tri-Cities.

Sunnyside sits at the center of our service area, and we work about 50 miles around it. That circle takes in Yakima and the Tri-Cities, and larger demolition jobs farther out in Washington are quoted on request. Because we also handle excavation in Sunnyside, the dirt work after a teardown comes from the same company.

What We Handle

  • House demolition: whole houses taken down and cleared off the lot
  • Barn demolition, pole barns and old farm sheds included
  • Detached garages and shop buildings torn down
  • Concrete tear-out: old slabs broken up and removed
  • Debris loaded and hauled away from the property
  • Lot grading after the teardown, when you want it
  • A written quote that lists what comes down and what stays
  • Larger demolition jobs farther out in Washington, quoted on request

House and barn demolition across the Lower Yakima Valley

A house demolition starts with a building that is past repair, or a lot you want for something new. Yakima County lists fire damage and water damage among the reasons a structure may need demolition. We take the whole structure down and clear it off the lot.

On farm ground around Sunnyside, the building might be an old barn or a leaning machine shed. Barn demolition follows the same steps as a house, and so do detached garages and shops. We take each one down and haul the debris out by the load.

What happens before a demolition contractor takes a building down?

Washington law calls for a good faith asbestos inspection before most demolition projects. The duty sits with the property owner or the owner's agent, and an accredited building inspector does the survey. State law has the property owner share the report with contractors before they bid. Any asbestos it finds is removed before the building comes down, usually by an abatement contractor.

In Yakima County, a demolition notice goes to the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency, even when no asbestos turns up. For most projects, the agency asks for it at least 10 days ahead. The Benton Clean Air Agency requires a notice for every demolition in Benton County. In Franklin County, the state Department of Ecology is the air agency.

Pulling a foundation moves material below the ground, so Washington's dig law applies. The locate request through 811 goes in two to 10 full business days before work starts. The utilities do not mark private lines, like power run to a shop or a private irrigation line. Finding those falls to the property owner.

Concrete tear-out and hauling the debris away

Old concrete can outlast the building that sat on it. We break out old slabs and haul the pieces off, and the written quote says which concrete comes out. Sometimes an old slab comes out to make room for a bigger concrete slab.

Debris leaves the property with us. Washington's outdoor burning rules list construction and demolition debris as a material that may not be burned. Lumber, roofing, metal and broken concrete all go out by the load.

Once the building is gone, the lot is ready for what comes next. We can grade it so water runs off, or start site preparation for the next build. When a new shop or carport is the plan, our general contracting work picks up from there.

FAQ

Demolition Questions, Answered

Common questions about demolition around Sunnyside and the towns out to Yakima and the Tri-Cities. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (509) 439-2533

How much does demolition cost?
Price comes down to the building's size and how it was built. The foundation, any slab, the amount of debris and anything the asbestos survey finds all change the work. We look at the job and put the quote in writing. For published market ranges, read what a house teardown costs in Washington.
Do I need a permit to tear down a house or barn?
Most demolition needs a permit, and inside Sunnyside the city's Building Division issues it. Outside city limits in Yakima County, the county's Building and Fire Safety Division does. The county asks for the property owner's signature on the application, or a contract. In other towns, ask that city's building department.
Can you take down an old barn or pole building?
Yes. Under the Yakima Regional Clean Air Agency's asbestos rules, a barn counts as a structure, the same as a house. Its list of structures also names pole buildings and lean-tos. So the survey and the notice come first, then the barn comes down and the debris goes out.
What should I do before the demolition starts?
Call each utility that serves the building and arrange to end service there. In the City of Yakima, capping an old sewer line takes its own plumbing permit. Move out anything you want to keep, since everything left inside goes out with the debris. Have the asbestos survey done early, because the notice and the quote both depend on it.
Will the foundation and slab come out too?
That depends on what comes next, and the written quote spells it out. Tell us the plan for the lot, and we price the foundation and any slab to match. In the City of Yakima, a leftover basement cannot be built on until it is filled with compacted structural fill.
Do you tear out interiors, or only whole buildings?
Our demolition work covers whole structures. Interior demolition, like gutting a kitchen or a bathroom, is not a service we offer. When the whole building is coming down, call or text (509) 439-2533.
